PAX Prime 2013 – XCOM: Enemy Within
That’s right, they are dropping some extra content. So much content in fact that they feel justified to charge you $40 more for it. Is it worth it? From what I saw, it just might be.
They’ve added a few different troop types for the makeup of your team. One such type is a genetically modified unit that can jump higher to get your sniper unit onto a perch they wouldn’t normally be able to get to without special gear. There’s also added a “landmine” type of mental defense so when an enemy tries to mind control you they get feed-backed for some pretty nasty damage (leveled up I’m assuming). I’m sure there are more than two, but that’s all they were willing to show in the game demo. (It’s also in the video above.)
My favorite is the mech trooper that has a moved called Collateral Damage that destroys cover and (thankfully) does damage to the hiding units as well. The move that’s even more fun is that when they are out of ammo, they aren’t out of luck. They also have a kinetic punch move that is just fun to watch.
They’ve also added about 47 new map types so you don’t have to play through the same maps over and over again. (Thank you for this Firaxis!) They’ve also rebalanced a good chunk of the moves to make others more attractive. Apparently Squad Site was pretty OP so you can now only crit with it if you get a head shot and that apparently makes Snap Shot a bit more enticing. Not a lot of people used that skill. Personally I regretted not picking Snap Shot up and a bud of mine picked that up quite a bit on his snipers. Guess we’re the odd ones out.
It’s not an add-on pack though. It’s like an big DLC pack. You’ll have to start over again without using your currently overpowered units and saves. They figured this was easier than trying to figure out how to continue after the story finished.
Also, they are not going to be underwater this time either. Apparently they wanted to keep the surroundings more familiar and less alien (so to speak).
There are no plans (as of yet) to release Enemy Within on the XBox One or the PS4. However, it should be out on the other platforms on the 14th of November from what they told me, but the video says the 12th. I’m going to say the 12th because that’s a Tuesday and Thursday would be a funky release day.
