A Virus Named TOM Review & Giveaway!

AVNT is like an odd mixture of Frogger(although more like the old school version), Pipe Dream/Mania, and a Rubik’s Cube(warning: there is some weird crap on that Rubik’s site) all mushed together with a sweet soundtrack!  Yes there are hyperlinks there, some people may unfortunately not know what I’m talking about.  A game like this is so simple yet fresh and exciting.  A Virus Named TOM is worth more than how little you pay for it.  Misfits Attic has brought us a … puzzle-ish game at times, but more of an action/strategy game that will have you growing muscles on your fingers and breaking your escape key.

Metal dogs?!?! This game has everything!

Instead of trying to explain the story behind this game, I’ll let the trailer explain it better.

So as you can see this game is crazy.  Don’t let some of those levels intimidate you; embrace the challenge.  That’s how you grow, right?  I’ve honestly not progressed through much of the story I’ll admit, but that’s because I was more focused on beating my friend’s times.  Of course, he has progressed and his TOM is upgraded.  You can read that as “cheating” in my book because now he’s ahead of me in a lot of them with the help of a new ability he’s obtained.  Back to the story mode for me!

This is one of the few levels that my buddy hasn’t killed my score yet.

I don’t have photo’s of the multiplayer including me and my bud because of the one “minus” that this game has.  Or at least it can be looked at as such.  There is not online multiplayer.

DON’T STOP READING HERE IF THAT BOTHERS YOU!

I wasn’t quite aware of this until my buddy and I tried to connect over Steam the other night.  Needless to say, it didn’t work.  That was not without a lack of trying though.  It turns out AVNT only supports more than one user while playing on the same PC.  I was totally upset when I figured this out… that is until I rediscovered something that I had left behind in my youth.

You could do this with your family, or your bros/chicas. Either way, some of my favorite gaming times were spent with my buds in the same room on the same screen.

What is it you ask?  Well it’s something that Nintendo has been pushing for years.  Playing with people you like in the same room on the same screen.  With some digging around in my buds room he finally found his PC controller he received as a gift years back.  We hooked it up to his rig and started up some AVNT.

Not to say that the single player isn’t as fun, but the multiplayer was awesome!  Playing on the same screen is something I don’t do often/ever with PC games and there is something more to it than playing across the internet.  The people over at Misfits Attic want to add online multiplayer later on, but right now having actually tried the local multiplayer I would say that it isn’t a minus.  It’s a different breed of multiplayer and there is something to being able to punch your friend just as he blocks you from flipping a line over.  It’s more personal and I like it.  I do look forward to the online multiplayer later on, but it’s more than fine the way it is right now.

This picture looks familiar, but I don’t have this ability so I may just be making things up in my head again…

The fact that this has a solid story and story mode with co-op and versus mode for buddies and is created by super friendly people is an excellent example on why gamers and people that aren’t gamers yet should be paying more attention to the indie dev’d titles out there.  There are some amazing games out there for pennies compared to the AAA titles and with more originality.

So a special shoutout to the good people over at Misfits Attic for supplying me with three copies of AVNT including Steam Keys AND Soundtrack’s for three super lucky people!  Since not many people read this site yet, your odds of nabbing yourself a copy are pretty darn good.

You’ve got to love good multiplayer. You’ve got to!

*********************************************************

The Rules of the contest are going to be simple so there is no confusion.

1.  Come up with an awesome reason why you should get a free copy of this game.  It can be funny, realistic, campy, artsy, or just plain crazy!  Wanna draw a picture?  Sure!  Can’t draw, but can think up a crazy story, do it!  (I can’t draw a stick figure to save my life so don’t feel bad if you fit into category number two.)  Keep in mind that while you can write some funny stuff, I have to personally read it so books aren’t fully appreciated.

IMPORTANT: Remember to not be offensive in your entries.  If you’re questioning whether or not what you are doing is offensive or not, that’s probably a good sign to not do it.  I would like to post the stories/reasons and/or pictures on the site.

2. Email your entry to Contest.TVGBL@gmail.com with “AVNT CONTEST” in the subject.  Remember to give your nick-name that you’d post comments here with and your Steam name or email so that if you win, I can actually give you a copy of AVNT.

3. Wait two weeks and cross your fingers.  Winners should be announced on December 21.

I’m a huge fan of puns and your entry doesn’t have to be huge, you just have to get me to like it.  I am easily entertained, true story.  I’m going to go stare at some moving objects now.

This game looks awesome! Especially the co-op side of it!

    • You got that right! It was more fun than I initially gave it the chance to be for myself. I’m one of those people that likes co-op, but feel it’s just tacked on at the end of the game making cycle most of the time. I’m usually dubious, but it’s well fleshed out here.

I’m not entering the contest as I already own it, but I just wanted to testify that this game is amazing. I overlooked it myself initially. “I think I’ll get bored of it.” I was dead wrong. I picked it up and my wife and I devoured the co-op campaign. We’d play for an hour or two at a time and she would always ask “So when are we going to play AVNT again?” I really, really enjoy this game, and getting all of the Steam achievements. My favorite achievements were the ones where you had to play a level without using glitches or stealing energy. It made the level so much harder. Anyway, I’ve rambled enough, but this game is worth your time.

P.S. I got to experience 4 player local co-op recently and it was a blast. A Virus Named TOM is the perfect excuse to throw a party.

    • I totally agree! However, you can still put your name into the hat if you’d like. Christmas is coming and I’m sure AVNT would make a sweet gift lol. *nudge*nudge*
