EA Loves You(r Money)!

I was just pointed to an article about EA and their great ideas for the future.  I’ll share some tidbits from the article full of quotes. (The article has since been taken down.)

“EA will be integrating microtransactions into all of its games in future, the publisher’s CFO has revealed.

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, Blake Jorgensen said the publisher was interested in adding further ways to monetize its games.

‘We’re building into all of our games the ability to pay for things along the way, either to get to a higher level to buy a new character, to buy a truck, a gun, whatever it might be, and consumers are enjoying and embracing that way of the business.’ “

In all honesty I am not a fan of microtransactions on the scale it sounds like they are planning.  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve played some free to play games and have given money to most of them.  (Sorry LoL, if I come back to you, I promise I’ll buy that mecha Urgot skin if it’s still available!)   However, “building it into all our games” just sounds like “I heard you like Crysis, but want that exploding bow you saw in the movies.  Well now it can be yours for a low, low price of $givemeyourmoney.”  It also reminds me of them charging for on-disc “DLC” or day-one DLC.  I don’t know man, it’s not like it’s evil or the devil, but it just really rubs me the wrong way.

Come on, that skin just makes Urgot look like a boss! It kind of makes me want to play a little right now, no lie.

I’m not about to not buy any game published by EA, but I don’t tend to buy DLC.  I don’t plan on buying the DLC for Fire Emblem.  Does anyone else remember the days when you could download the new maps for a Call of Duty game for free?  Or when player made maps were more prevalent?

Before anyone gives me a “this is the future, get with the program” junk, it shouldn’t be.  They already charge us for the games, can’t I just buy a game and get everything with it?  This probably could be answered by a quote of mine:

“If you can put, ‘Is it too much to ask…’ before you question, then it probably is.”

I’m also ok with expansions as per my experience with WoW. I love expansions, I don’t tend to like nickle and dime stuff though.

Also, EA canceling Crysis 3 after it’s “up and running beautifully” on the Wii U was a punk move. Just keep digging EA, just keep digging…
