Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

I know it’s all shine and glam and just a cg’d video, but if anyone ever thought that SquareEnix forgot how to tug on the heart and make an epic trailor, this is a cold dose of reality!  While it doesn’t represent gameplay or how well the game is coming along, this video does give me hope that the people behind FFXIV V.2 have a clear idea on where they’re going with it.

This has to be rough for the people that stuck with the game through the revamping progress since the video is the ending of the progress that has been done in the game.  Basically it was the last stand between good and evil and evil hath layethed the smack down.  Spoiler alert: they get saved by that old guy (I believe his name is Louisoix) and sent to safety.  Someone told me five years into the future, but seeing as how the bad guys just won and everything got nuked, that doesn’t seem like a very good idea.

We’ll just have to see if the guys and gals over at SquareEnix can do what I don’t believe has been done before.  Basically, they are trying to save an MMO that crashed and burned and are trying to rise from the ashes like the proverbial phoenix.  I’m excited to see what they do for this game that is relaunching in 2013 on PC and PS3.  Will I join up with them?  Only time will tell, but I loved me some Final Fantasy XI…

  • I played FFXIV up to the level cap and got all my AF armor for Monk. I can tell you it was fun, but the sense of community wasn’t there like it was in XI. The funny thing is, our guild had the maximum amount of members allowed too, which wasn’t very much (no clue why they had a low guild member cap). If in your future journeys in the new XIV you find a great community, let me know and I’ll reboot my account and join you, since I don’t have to level up again haha. Btw he’s XIV’s version of a Tarutaru, a Lalafel! Just like Kynen! 😀

I’ve been thinking about picking it up, but still haven’t. This reboot looks as amazing as the actual game did for me. I hope that with the new start, the people who stuck it out give the game some sort of friendly “we’ve been here and know how this works” bit instead of a “we were here first and we’re better than you, stop asking stupid questions”. Community does make and/or break a game for me. That’s why I stopped playing TERA since it wasn’t super fun playing a great MMO with one bud, no matter who that may have been.

I still haven’t found a game where I could make a character named Kynen and have it fit well enough. It would be great to get back into that.

While it would be good to see a FF MMO that actually sticks around, I have little hope based on the track record thus far. They seem to have trouble learning from their mistakes….

Any MMO is having troubles competing with WoW. There are many that would have been considered quality games but can’t get the players because of all the time and money they have already spent on WoW. I would have like to join the first FFMMORPG and the current SW:TOR but couldn’t justify it for that reason…

We can always cross our fingers can’t we? A man can dream…

I also think that people would leave WoW if they would make an actual good MMO. The main problem with WoW is that it did a lot of things well. Most of the newer MMO’s do one or two elements very well, but the rest aren’t great or “will be released in a few months” after the launch. It’s not good enough right now. Maybe if they didn’t consider having as many subs as WoW success and would be happy with 1/2 to 1 mil subs.

Very interesting. Didn’t realize they made a FFXIV, let alone an MMORPG style. There was a family discussion about hair and eyes, and someones tongue confused the words and it came out “blue hair and curly eyes”. I told them it sounds like it could be the description of the main character in FFXIV, because of the anime being exaggerated.

  • Well I’m glad to see that after a couple years they are making a game that is worth playing. The game has always been graphically amazing, but the original release was such a disappointment.

Like I stated above… we can still hope although I wouldn’t recommend holding our breathes for any MMO now adays to completely blow us away.

I don’t think the problem was people weren’t willing to leave WoW. I know quite a few people that disappeared from WoW for awhile after SWTOR came out. The problem they seem to be having is they can’t KEEP interest.

    • I guess people are just waiting for the next mmo that does everything they want. Hype machines asside, if a great game came out, you probably couldn’t stop the flood of people.

I just wonder if there will ever be an mmo that gets so many though. I just hope devs aren’t basing success on that amount of subs when compared ot WoW…

  • On the topic of Wow…. Guys I haven’t played WoW since January of 2011. I left because my wife and I decided it just wasn’t the best thing for our marriage. Both of us still game a lot, but we’re on our own schedule now, not a raiding schedule. It’s nice to put our marriage first and not raids first. I do miss those dungeons from WoW though. Out of all MMO’s they were the most fun I had…even more fun than HNM camping in FFXI.

  • How is it that I did not know you had a web site John? You should totally be including me in this! who knows more about FFXI or FFXIV then me? … the producer that’s about it.

I’m still playing FFXI, let me tell you, it’s not dead, I’ve taken breaks, I’ve tried Tera, wow, Aion, Scarlet blade (don’t play this one… unless your an old perv… who hates video games with quality.) Eve-online~ recently Ragnarok II, and several others.

FFXI still has a community That does not exist in any other game! all the players are friendly and helpful. and I have several maxed out jobs now.

But to get back on subject. FFXIV the first release was… awkward, clumsy, and a bit boring.

Alpha test: The game was very pretty, not much to the game itself, was about the quality of a Free-to-play MMO and Very WOW rip-off ish with the Final Fantasy Flair~

Beta phase 1, and 2, Added more content. Quests, C/S, Story, Emotes, a lot of the stuff you’d miss from FFXI.

Beta Phase 3 releases soon, this is going to be very close to how the finished game will be.
But I fear S.E. has changed the basics of the game to a Standard MMO format (A.K.A. WoW style). I think this will be a great game! but they conformed to Social norms for the MMO. moving away from the FFXI style. and making FFXI truly unique.

FFXIV will be (Just another MMO) I look forward to playing the game none the less, maybe I’ll be surprised.

  • Even though it’s looking like they made it into WoW, there is a certain awesomeness about the FF series with the names of the spells and the lands that will forever be better. Even if that’s nostalgia talking, I don’t care. FFXIV does look pretty impressive and while they may have catered to the WoW look, I did play WoW for a while sooooo… having it reskinned could do something for me. Time will tell though, I hope they put out a free trial period though.
